SHARON DUGAN HATES TO PART WITH HER ANTIQUES

Last year Sharon Dugan, of East Palestine, won a plaque for “The Best Overall Antique Display at the 15th Annual Antiques in the Woods Festival.” She doesn’t expect to rest on her laurels in 2007.

“The event has a new name this year and I’ll have to work toward an award with the new name – ‘The Best Overall Antique Display in the 16th Annual Autumn in the Woods Festival.’”

Her skill as a judge of antique furniture and accessories combined with her decorating savvy should make this a strong possibility. She’s spent most of the past year making the rounds of Ohio auctions and estate sales where she buys up the accumulated treasures of past generations. Her two-car garage, two storage buildings and her basement bulge with the kinds of things she knows others will want.

“I don’t buy anything I wouldn’t want for my own house,” she says. “The secret of antiques that many people today realize is that we can buy an antique and use it for awhile and resell it for at least as much as we paid for it. Genuine antiques never lose their value.”

She’s had trouble deciding to pass on a favorite dining room set this year, but she found some other dining room pieces she enjoys as well.

“This set has a nice oak dining room table and chairs and a sideboard and Hoosier cupboard. The cupboards are stenciled and the artwork is in very good condition. I used to do refinishing but a few years ago, I decided to buy only things in usable condition. I don’t have the shop on my property any longer so I think about the size of things that we can haul to the show without special equipment.”

She loves small cupboards and finds they are getting scarcer because heirs may not want the big pieces they inherit, but everyone can find a space and a use for small cupboards.

“I know someone is going to fall in love with the 6-foot walnut bed I found this year. It’s really gorgeous.”

If you like the colonial look, Sharon has kitchenware including rolling pins, scales, oil lamps, lanterns and crocks. Her children’s things include oak and wicker chairs, rockers and stools.

“I can’t handle many very large pieces, but I hope to have a marble top dresser ready. So many customers from past years come back looking for pieces that are compatible from past buys. I appreciate that antiques mix and match well. Natural wood finishes always blend.”

Sharon husband understands her addiction to antiques and he enjoys using them in their home. Although he has a full time job during the week, he often spends his weekends with her on buying or selling expeditions.

“Our two sons are grown up now and the one who lives in New Waterford helps me by moving things around in his truck. Our other son and his family live in Tennessee. We tried moving south to the Carolinas, but in 14-months, we were homesick for Ohio.”

Those who know Sharon and her dedication to finding quality antiques will be happy to see that although she no longer has a shop, she has “Autumn in the Woods” as her showroom.
