Friday & Saturday: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Join archaeologists from across the country to see what they uncover during a weeklong field school on three different sites. Two sites are Native American, one of which also has early colonial presence. The other site is possibly an enslaved person’s cabin on Walnut Valley Farm. Visitors may drive to two sites and a wagon ride will be available to the third. Wilderness Survival with Vickie Shufer Saturday: 10 a.m. -2 p.m. Evening workshop from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. Wild food expert, Vickie Shufer, will present a day program to learn how to use native plants for food, shelter, tools and medicine. During her evening workshop, discover even more essential techniques to survive being lost in the wilderness, from bUilding basic shelters to starting a fire in the rain. Evening workshop is $10 per person and limited to 25 people. Call park office, 757-294-3625 to register. Virginia Indians: Past, Present, and Future (Chickahominy, Nansemond, Pamunkey, and Nottoway) Friday and Saturday: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. These tribes have been invited to share their cultural heritage during the public days for the field school. The Nottoway are the only ones confirmed. The Department of Historic Resources will present information as well. Nottoway Indian Tribe of Va, Inc. Saturday, 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. Cooking In Chains with Michael Twitty Saturday: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Humanities scholar, Michael Twitty, shares his knowledge and expertise in African American foodways cooking. Travel with him on a journey that will take you and your taste buds back to Africa! Civil War Encampment Saturday & Sunday: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Experience camp life as if you were a Confederate Soldier!
